Have you heard the news? It's been in all those lady-gossip mags and popping up on the sports pages. Glenn McGrath and new wife, Sara Leonardi-McGrath, are expecting their first child together.

Not sure why we're writing about this? Well that's until you find out that the pregnancy is thanks to their own IVF treatment. The couple, who married in 2010, had to overcome a number of fertility hurdles including a vasectomy that McGrath had undergone in 2003. This meant that McGrath had to undergo microsurgery to extract sperm directly from his testicles to be inserted directly into eggs harvested from his wife during a separate procedure. Once the embryos were growing well, they were transferred back into Sara and the waiting game began. As anyone who had undergone IVF treatment knows, the waiting game for the positive pregnancy test is the last step of the process.

Embryo transfers using surgically extracted sperm are rare, whereby fewer than 3000 (or 4%) of embryo transfers in 2012 involved surgically retrieved sperm and less than one third of these led to pregnancy - according to figures from the Australian and New Zealand Assisted Reproductive Database.

Leonardi-McGrath's IVF treatment involved months of hormone therapy and egg collections. The couple conceived on their second cycle and are expecting their baby in October.

How exciting for them! If you are interested in undergoing IVF, give us a call here at Demeter and booked an appointment with us at Demeter Hurstville or Demeter Liverpool.
