Interstate fertility patients

Access to fertility care should not depend on your postcode. We support patients from across Australia and overseas, enabling you to complete most of your IVF process close to home, travelling to Sydney only when it is clinically required.

Accessing IVF care when you live outside Sydney

Many of our patients live outside metropolitan Sydney. We’ve treated Queenslanders seeking IVF options, patients from rural or regional Australia and those from other Australian cities. Increasingly, we’re also seeing patients from overseas, including those living in New Zealand, the USA, Africa and Europe.

Our process aims to minimise your travel and costs, bringing you to Sydney only when it’s really necessary.

How our interstate IVF process works

The IVF process for interstate and international patients follows similar medical steps to attending a local clinic, with additional planning around timing and travel. As every treatment plan is individual, your exact sequence may differ, but it usually includes these stages.

  • Book a telehealth appointment with one of our fertility specialists.
  • You’ll receive registration forms and a secure Zoom link before your appointment.

  • We’ll email you a pathology form after your consultation so you can have blood tests done at your local pathology centre.
  • Similarly, an ultrasound for follicular tracking can be performed at a local imaging centre, with reports sent directly to Demeter Fertility for same-day review where possible.

  • One of our nurses talks you through your individual treatment plan, medications, expected monitoring schedule and what to do on Day 1 of your cycle.
  • If you are using donor sperm or donor eggs, you will also meet with our donor coordinator to discuss the donor process and access our donor bank information.

    • When you are ready to commence, you contact the clinic on Day 1 of your menstrual cycle.
    • Our team confirms your next steps, including any additional blood tests or scans arranged with local clinics.

  • You travel to Sydney for procedures that must be performed in person, such as IVF egg collection, embryo transfer, ovarian rejuvenation and other surgical services.
  • These procedures take place at our Liverpool or Hurstville locations, depending on your treating doctors availability.
  • Once your session is over, you’re free to enjoy a day out in our beautiful harbourside city (it’s about 45 minutes from our clinic).

  • After embryo transfer, your doctor or nurse provides a pathology form with the recommended date for your pregnancy blood test.
  • You have this test completed at a local pathology centre, then our team contacts you with the result and next steps.

This structure allows you to complete most of your IVF process locally, while key procedures are performed by your Demeter Fertility specialist in Sydney.

IVF travel – accommodation and planning your stay

Interstate Travel to Demeter Fertility

Planning IVF travel on 48–72 hours’ notice can feel stressful, especially when you are coordinating work, family and other commitments.

Demeter Fertility acknowledges this challenge and has arrangements in place to support patients as much as possible.

Key points for your trip to Sydney include:

  • Demeter Fertility has partnered with Travelodge Hurstville to offer last-minute accommodation at a discounted rate for interstate patients.
  • Travelodge Hurstville is approximately 200 metres from our Hurstville clinic, making it convenient when you are attending for egg collection or embryo transfer.

  • The Hurstville area includes Westfield Hurstville, Hurstville Aquatic Leisure Centre and local dining options, all accessible by public transport.

Our administration and nursing teams can provide practical information about timing, transport and accommodation options so you can plan your IVF travel with greater confidence.

IVF egg collection and embryo transfer in Sydney

For interstate and international patients, travel to Sydney is required only for procedures that cannot be delivered remotely. These typically include:

  • Ovarian rejuvenation procedures
  • IVF egg collection
  • Embryo transfer
  • Other necessary surgical procedures related to your treatment.

Egg collections and embryo transfers are usually performed in our consult procedure rooms or affiliated facilities linked to our Liverpool and Hurstville clinics. The timing of these procedures is coordinated carefully with your monitoring results to minimise time away from home, but you may sometimes need to stay in Sydney between egg collection and embryo transfer, depending on your individual treatment plan.

How our interstate IVF process works

The IVF process for interstate and international patients follows similar medical steps to attending a local clinic, with additional planning around timing and travel. As every treatment plan is individual, your exact sequence may differ, but it usually includes these stages.

  • Blood tests and ultrasound scans arranged with local providers may attract fees charged by those clinics, which are separate from Demeter Fertility’s fees.
  • Medications are accessed through local pharmacies or via delivery, and associated costs will depend on the prescribed medications and any applicable subsidies.

  • Facility, anaesthetic and procedural costs for IVF egg collection, embryo transfer or other procedures will be discussed with you before booking so you understand the likely financial commitment.

If you have questions about fees, gaps or Medicare rebates for your individual situation, our team can provide general information and direct you to appropriate resources.

IVF laws in Australia and how they apply to interstate patients

If you live outside New South Wales but receive fertility treatment at Demeter Fertility, your treatment is governed by the laws and regulations that apply to the treating doctor and clinic in NSW.

This means that interstate regulatory bodies such as the Victorian Assisted Reproductive Treatment Authority (VARTA) do not apply to treatment undertaken with Demeter Fertility in NSW.

Australian IVF clinics are licensed by RTAC, an independent committee of the Fertility Society of Australia and New Zealand. RTAC sets minimum quality and safety standards for assisted reproductive technology services and audits clinics against a formal Code of Practice.  Clinics must also follow NHMRC ethical guidelines on the use of assisted reproductive technology in clinical practice and research.

Rest assured that Demeter Fertility abides by RTAC standards, NSW law and relevant Australian legislation.

Who we care for as interstate IVF patients

Why choose Demeter Fertility

Our interstate and international care model supports a wide range of people, including:

  • Individuals and couples who live in states such as Queensland, Victoria or Western Australia and are exploring IVF options beyond local clinics
  • People in regional or rural areas where specialist services are limited or wait times are lengthy
  • Single women seeking fertility assessment or treatment
  • Patients requiring specific services such as ovarian rejuvenation or donor-assisted treatment
  • People living overseas who wish to undergo IVF in Australia.

Regardless of where you live, our goal is to provide continuity with a dedicated fertility specialist and a clear plan for your IVF process, supported by coordinated local testing and telehealth care.

Do you have to use telehealth for your appointments?

Most interstate patients prefer telehealth for convenience, but you are not required to use it exclusively. If you would rather see your doctor in person, our team can arrange a face-to-face appointment and help you plan timing around your travel needs. Telehealth is offered as an additional option to reduce disruption, not as an obligation.
